Gilbert and George at The Tate Modern

Gilbertandgeorge_1

We've never been entirely sure about the work of Gilbert and George, and have always had the distinct feeling that they themselves are far more interesting than the art they produce.

Their huge retrospective (showcasing almost a fifth of their work) at the Tate Modern rather confirmed that view; but we did find ourselves very much liking their earlier work, back in the days when their art consisted mainly of getting drunk and then documenting their increasing inebriation.

We were especially taken with Pink Elephants, from 1973, an eight part 'Postal Sculpture', where each recipient received a Pink Elephant (a greeting card from Gilbert and George with an image on the front and short drinking anecdote on the inside) each week for eight weeks. (Our cameraphone shots of them came out really badly, so we've recreated the message from one above.)

There's a great Guardian piece about those times here, and the Tate website has some fantastic films about how the show came together.
