LCC Dare to Dream
I visited Mexico City in March this year, and took part in the city’s fantastic Paseo Dominical (Sunday Ride), part of their Muévete en Bici (Get on Your Bike) programme. Check out some very happy cyclists (and their dogs!) over on my Instagram reel of the event. They close off 60km of the city’s main thoroughfares (including some huge six-lane roads) to motor traffic three Sunday mornings out of every month. Running since 2007, it’s hugely inspiring and utterly transformative. More than 125 thousand people took part in the one I was on, and most kids in the city now learn to ride during the Sunday rides. People cycle, jog, walk and rollerblade; the city breathes easier, and people are happier.
The idea started in Bogotá, with the Ciclovía (Cycleway) which has been running there since 1974. They now close over 120km of the city’s streets to motor traffic every Sunday, and it regularly attracts a staggering 1.5 million people. Schemes of varying sizes are already happening in major cities across the world. It would only take a bit of ambition and imagination to make the same thing happen in London.
London Cycling Campaign are hoping to kick start that process, and their summer campaign this year is Dare to Dream, following on from last year’s hugely successful London Loves Cycling campaign.
I designed the identity for the campaign, which needed to convey positivity and possibility, as well as a sense of action, while being bright and colourful. The campaign was rolled out across all LCC’s social media channels, leading viewers to a main homepage, with a call to action to email the mayor, using a simple form on the site. The four commitments LCC is hoping for from Sadiq Khan are:
• Start monthly car-free Sundays across London
• Make a bike available for every Londoner
• Make cycling safe for families in outer London
• Give London a low traffic West End
